NHS Hosts Custodian Appreciation Dinner
The spirit of Thanksgiving has made its way to Mansfield High this year. Many people are looking for ways to give back to the community with different organizations, but the National Honor Society found a different way to spread the spirit of being giving. NHS did a Thanksgiving dinner for all of the custodians that work at MHS to show their appreciation.
“The custodians work so hard for us teenagers and they deserve to be thanked,” said treasurer Cami Gee.
The idea to do a dinner came up last year whenever the officers of NHS were trying to brainstorm ways they could show appreciation to the support staff of the school.
“We checked with Mr. Vopal and we were told that we have 20 custodians, 4 during the day and 16 at night, and that he thought it was a wonderful idea,” said NHS sponsor Mrs. Bridges. ” The officers felt that the time between Thanksgiving break and Christmas break that members were being asked to participate in too many things, so the idea to provide a dinner to show our appreciation was the next choice. The National Honor Society took this idea and decided to make it something that would make our custodians know that everything they do for us on a daily basis is valued, but more importantly to let them know that they are truly cherished members of our campus. National Honor Society again called upon Key Club and Student Council to help with the gathering funds. NHS put the menu together, provided desserts and drinks, and served the meals to the custodial staff.”
NHS catered the dinner from Dicky’s BBQ and they provided deserts that gave off the feeling of Thanksgiving. The custodians enjoyed the dinner and all the work that was put into it payed off.
“It brings us into a holiday spirit, we appreciate it so much,” said custodian Clee Simkins.
Smiles, laughter and gratitude were also among the menu that night.
“I try very hard to understand English but it’s hard. I don’t know why you are doing this meal, but we are very grateful. We are very thankful and have much gratitude,” said custodian Jose Torres.
The organization did a great job with dinner, but have not decided if a Thanksgiving dinner is going to be an annual event yet.
“NHS is a truly student led organization and they will meet to reflect on the event and discuss what they will do next year. The goal is show the custodial staff our appreciation each and every year, I just don’t know the venue it will take on for next year.” Said Mrs. Bridges.
The overall turn out was great and the custodians are very grateful. NHS did a wonderful act of kindness and you can do one too. Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving!
