Throwback Thursday:Teachers Edition- Tanya Richards

April 21, 2016

This weeks Throwback Thursday is over a student favorite, Ms. Richards. While she resides in the history hallway, she is known for her rewarding stickers, making you memorize quotes/words of the week, honesty and a personal space bubble.

What high school did you attend?
I went to El Capitan High School located in San Diego, California .

What clique/group did you hang out with?
I hung out with hooligans and delinquents early on, and then when I started playing basketball I began to hang out with jocks.

What sports did you play in high school?

I was a knucklehead growing up and didn’t start playing basketball until I was almost 16. I had so much to learn that I didn’t have time to learn any other sports.

Did you go to prom?
Nope! I was “too cool” for that. I wish I would have gone.

What was your favorite subject?
When I was in 10th grade, I took World History and fell in love with it. I loved learning about different cultures and enjoyed connecting the events of the past to today’s news.

What were you like in high school?
I was really unfocused and a bit rebellious. I didn’t relate to many of my teachers and sometimes I was unruly.

Did you always want to be a teacher?
Well, I grew up wanting to be a dolphin trainer at Sea World! But when I hit 10th grade, I knew that students needed diverse teachers that understood their lives and struggles and I wanted to fill that role.

Any advice for the students here in Mansfield?
One thing I wished I had learned early on is ACCOUNTABILITY. Once I realized that I couldn’t blame other people for my grades or for my actions, the world opened up to me.
