Basketball Rivals Go Head to Head in Close Game
On Dec. 20, the boys basketball team played Legacy High School in a game that came down to the wire. Mansfield, led by senior Isaiah Torregrossa’s game high of 30 points, seven steals and eight assists came up just short of the win. Legacy, led by junior Amir McMillan’s 24 points and two steals was enough to top Mansfield 83-79. At one point Legacy led by as much as 20 points, after a rally to tie the game, the teams were tied and went into overtime. In overtime, Legacy managed to make some stops and hit some big shots, ultimately resulting in a win after the comeback by the Tigers. Legacy bested the Tigers in rebounds with 15 more boards, and nine more free throws, making those two stats major contributors to the Legacy victory. Mansfield, currently 18 and 6 sits sixth in the standings, hoping to make a push for a playoff spot, and legacy sits at third place in the district with a 17 and 6 record.
Before the rematch on Jan. 24, junior Ryan Brenneman explains the plan the team has to secure the next game
“We’re looking to take the win over Legacy in a must win game to set ourselves up to make the playoffs.”
In the second game against Legacy, Mansfield kept it close during the first quarter, even erasing a first quarter deficit of 10 points, but everything after the first quarter seemed to go Legacy, who was able to make many shots including a high volume of three pointers, ultimately leading to a Legacy victory at home.
