This week’s staff member is Special Education ISLE teacher Amy Dragon. She is joining Mansfield High this year as a first-time teacher.
Q: What high school did you attend?
A: I attended Arlington High School
Q: What jobs did you have before becoming a teacher?
A: I worked in a day care through college. After college, I was a Food Microbiologist for 5 years. Then, I became a home-bound teacher for kids who couldn’t go to school because of medical reasons. After my kids started elementary school, I became a fulltime teacher. I have taught almost every science that’s offered. This is my first year as a special education teacher.
Q: Who was your favorite singer or music group?
A: My favorite singer is Steven Tyler from Aerosmith
Q: What kind of high school student would you have described yourself as?
A: I was a C student. I tried just hard enough to pass so my parents wouldn’t bother me. I always had a job during high school so that took a lot of my time. It wasn’t until I went to college and took my first science class that I realized there was an A student trapped inside of me!
Q: What is the most shocking fact about your high school self?
A: I did a lot of dumb things in high school and somehow made it out unscathed. I regret not getting involved in sports and clubs. I had a lot of potential but was more interested in working and making money and having fun with my friends than anything else.
Q: Where did you go for college and what was your major?
A: I went to Texas A&M and majored in Microbiology. I was planning to be a pharmacist but then decided to be a microbiologist. I had always wanted to be a teacher but my dad had talked me out of it. I ended up doing that anyway later in life and I love it.
Q: What are you most excited for this year?
A: I am most excited to see what all this school has to offer for students. It seems like there are always awesome activities planned and I’ve enjoyed it so far.
