Mansfield High’s Theater will perform its spring musical “Footloose” at the Mansfield ISD Center for Performing Arts from Thursday to Saturday. Taking center stage is Hudson Womack as “Ren McCormack” and Madeleine Simpson as “Ariel Moore.”
“I’m excited to build on what I’ve done so far,” Womack said. “Really, I want people to see this show because it’s just so good.”
Footloose was first released as a musical drama film in 1984 by Paramount Pictures. The film was a box office success and saw a musical adaptation and 2011 remake. In the movie, Ren McCormack moves to the small town of Bomont (not Beaumont), Texas where rock music and dancing are banned as the town’s pastor attempts to control Bomont’s morality. As the movie continues, Ren falls for Ariel Moore, the pastor’s daughter, while finding himself rebelling more against the town’s strict rules.
Unlike the previous performance in October, Footloose is hosted at the MISD PAC. This larger venue grants the cast more creative liberty with their performance. Additionally, band members perform the music in-house. The band, actors and actresses’ work all culminate in an incredibly engaging performance. As someone who has never seen Footloose, this performance has interested me in checking out the original film, especially with the one-liners scattered throughout.
As far as criticisms go, there’s little to be said. Although there are challenges that come with a different environment, each issue was resolved as it arose. Nothing truly took away from the viewing experience of this great rendition.
All in all, this was yet another solid performance from Mansfield’s Theater. Be sure to catch “Footloose” at the MISD PAC from
Wednesday to Saturday at 7:00 p.m. Tickets cost $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Students seeking to pre-order tickets must visit L2 and L3 beforehand.
