Throwback Thursday: Teacher Edition- James Bowling

This week’s Throwback Thursday is over US History teacher James Bowling. Bowling, also affectionately referred to as “Jimbo” has a certain type of sarcasm unparalleled to any other. The John Green doppelgänger was just as interesting in his youth as he is now.

What type of student were you in high school?

“Ambivalent at best, if I liked the subject I was good at it, but I didn’t work hard enough.”

What extracurricular activities were you involved in during high school?

“I played golf, tennis, and basketball.”

What type of music did you listen to as a teenager?

“I listened to classic rock. Bands like Neil Young, Rolling Stones, and the Grateful Dead.”

What was your most embarrassing moment in high school?

“The most embarrassing moment for me in high school was when a girl told me in the hallway in front of a whole bunch of people that she couldn’t go to prom with me because I was only a junior and she was a senior.”

What was your most shocking thing about yourself in high school?

“I wrote poetry in high school. I wasn’t very good at it, but I only did it to try and impress the girls I was interested in.”

What college did you choose to go to and why?

“I went to the University of Indiana because my brother went out of state, so I thought I should go too but I didn’t like it. I then transferred to Austin College and graduated from there.

Why did you choose history as a subject to teach?

“Originally I majored in business, but I was horrible at it so I switched to history because I love history.”
